I really like the way the first shot came out. I still need to pick one more photo with a good big smile. Some of the photos below are not appropriate as headshots but I posted them anyway because I like them! I’ll update the post after I get Jen’s reactions!

I had the pleasure of working a summer internship at the Rocky Mountain News a few years ago. As I watched this video that the newsroom posted this morning, I recognized many people that I worked with. I am saddened for their loss as more than 200 people are now out of work and I am saddened by the loss of one of America’s greatest and most decorated newspapers. It is a sad day for Colorado and a sad day for Journalism.

After a long day of hoofing it all over downtown DC, I wanted to share some photographs with you all. This morning we headed first to the White House to check out the Presidential Viewing Area.

Then we were off to Dupont Circle where we came upon a group of protesters demanding that Bush and his administration be tried for war crimes. They had erected a 20-foot-tall inflatable caricature of George W. Bush as Pinocchio and were throwing shoes at him. Over and over people took off their shoes and threw them at his long pointy nose. A speaker in the background spoke of how he reserved one shoe for Bush and another for Obama. About 30 minutes after we had come upon the group, they assembled into a march and headed down Connecticutt Avenue with a police escort.

Our next stop was a nearby Starbucks to collect our entry tickets for the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow morning. We met up with photographer Kasia from the Daily Camera, who captured us receiving the tickets and photographing them with our cell phones. From here we traveled several blocks and met up with a reporter for the Scripps Media News Service. Scripps is the parent company of the Daily Camera and Rocky Mountain News. We spoke with him for nearly two hours about a variety of subjects including what role we felt the internet played in this election as well as are people being too idealistic with their expectations for the Obama Administration. We greatly enjoyed speaking with him.

Later we met up with two friends of mine from several years ago - fellow alums of the University of Colorado. We found a really good Irish pub in Chinatown that reminded me a lot of Conor O’Neill’s. Finally we made our way back toward the Capitol Building to get a feel of what we would be getting ourselves into tomorrow as well as to view the Capitol lit up in the night sky.

I can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring.

My friend Ben and I have a busy day ahead of us. We arrived into DC late last night and finally got settled at my family’s house by 11pm.

We were able to watch a rebroadcast of the “We Are One” event last night after relaxing from the long plane flight. I am bummed that I wasn’t able to be there like the previous blogger, but it excited me even more for what lies ahead the next several days.

It is markedly colder than Colorado, here today. Cold and damp. The weather report is saying they could well recieve the first significant (by DC standards) snowfall of the season.

Our first order of business is to retrieve our swearing-in tickets from Congressman Jared Polis’s staffers. We will jump on the metro at the station just down the street from the Pentagon and make our way into the District. I’ll post photos of the tickets as soon as I have them!

—————–

I’m finally on my way.

Just under one month ago I received an email from Congressman Jared Polis’s office letting me know I was the lucky recipient of tickets to the Presidential Inauguration. I remember I nearly dropped my phone as I read and reread the email. My initial reaction was to tell as many of my coworkers as possible. And within an hour I had a good laugh as I received a rejection letter from Senator Salazar regarding his allotment of tickets. It didn’t matter, 2 tickets were already enough!

I fly out today and arrive in DC by evening. I will be staying with family inside the Beltway on the Virginia side, right down the street from the CIA. I have traveled to DC often over the past several years so my motivation for this trip is more to be there for the political and historical significance than to soak in the tourist perspective. My friend who is accompanying me, however, has never been to our nation’s capital. What a time to come to the city! We will do our best to hit as many of the must-sees as he wants on our free days on both Monday and Wednesday. But come Tuesday, we will be taking our place on the Capitol Grounds.

I hope to be able to post often as well as put up photos as frequently as possible. Thanks for stopping by.

This upcoming week, I will be having an experience of a lifetime. I will be traveling to Washington, DC to attend the inauguration of President Obama. Not only is this an historic event from a racial perspective, this is a turning point in our history as a nation seeking to find our role in the changing global climate.

Over the past two years I have become increasingly interested in politics and the run-up to this most recent election. I am very excited to be in DC to be a part of the event and I am sure it is something I will never forget.

The plan is to travel to Washington this Sunday, stay with family for five days and return on Thursday of next week. I will be attending the inauguration along with a buddy of mine.

I have been asked to blog about my experience by my local newspaper, who also interviewed me for an upcoming 8-page package they are running about the event. This is the first time, since becoming interested in and studying journalism, that I have been the interviewee. It is all so surreal and exciting at the same time. I am also planning on meeting up with a reporter from Scripps Howard News Service to chat about traveling across country to attend the swearing-in. Scripps Howard is the parent company of the Rocky Mountain News, Daily Camera in Boulder, and 10 plus other papers around the country.

You can follow myself and several other Boulder County residents at the Daily Camera’s Inauguration blog here. Check back daily to keep up with what we are doing! I will be cross-posting my entries here on my own blog with what I write for the Daily Camera.
